Desktop already includes the local runtime
Install the Desktop app on the computer where you want the full workspace. Do not add a separate Node to that same machine just to run local tasks.
Use a Node for another execution machine
A Node is for a separate Mac or Linux machine you want to reach remotely. It runs as the intended non-root user and keeps provider credentials on that machine.
Provider access is separate
The free CodeTether allowance does not include model credits. Codex, Claude Code, API, or subscription costs remain governed by the AI service you choose.
